OFFICIAL CITY OF VANCOUVER PRESS RELEASE:
Vancouver celebrates 25th anniversary of Arbor Day
The City of Vancouver unfurls a month-long community celebration of trees with a traditional Arbor Day planting event, from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, at Esther Short Park, Sixth and Columbia Streets in downtown Vancouver.
This year’s Arbor Day theme, “Our Trees, Our Future” encourages Vancouver residents to take care of our trees now and for future generations.
During the event, Vancouver will be recognized for its commitment with the prestigious Tree City USA Growth Award and as Tree City USA for the 25th consecutive year. The celebration will include brief comments by local and state officials, members of Vancouver’s Urban Forestry Commission, the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, and Parks and Recreation director Julie Hannon. The ceremonial planting of the official Arbor Day tree, a Bosque Elm, will conclude the event. Vancouver residents are invited to attend the event and receive a free tree seedling to take home to plant. Children will be treated to activities inspiring stewardship of trees and other natural resources.
Vancouver’s Arbor Day celebration and the many other Arbor Month events provided by Urban Forestry are free and open to the public: Downtown VDA Tree Planting, April 4; and Gretchen Frasier Tree Planting, April 12.
For a complete listing of activities, including times and locations, visit the Urban Forestry webpage or call (360)487-8308.
